The study area is located on the northern suburbs of Bologna, between the old tramway to Malalbergo and the highway that runs alongside the ring road. It is included within Navile and S. Donato neighborhoods. These two suburban neighborhoods are mainly characterized by the elderly population and a high proportion of immigrants, by the presence of many public and degraded buildings and many abandoned areas following the disposal of large industrial parks and wastelands.

L’area oggetto di studio si trova nella periferia a nord di Bologna, tra la vecchia tramvia per Malalbergo e l’autostrada che corre a fianco della tangenziale. Essa risulta compresa  all’interno dei quartieri Navile e S. Donato. Si tratta di due quartieri periferici caratterizzati principalmente da popolazione anziana e da un elevato numero d’immigrati, dalla presenza di edilizia pubblica degradata e numerose aree abbandonate in seguito alla dismissione di grandi poli industriali e di terreni incolti.

Peri-urban space that stretches for almost 5 km presents some peculiar characteristics: to be confined between two heavy infrastructure and be punctuated by areas with a strong state of neglect.

Lo spazio periurbano che si estende per quasi 5 Km presenta alcune caratteristiche peculiari: essere confinato tra due pesanti infrastrutture ed essere costellato da spazi che presentano un forte stato di incuria.

The ring road and the railway, on the one hand, allow to draw a clear and hard line to the area, on  the other hand, they make it a transition zone, a thick border to cross to reach the city center or that part of the country that still can be defined such. It is a dynamic territory transversely cut from freeway arteries that on the one hand divide it into a series of islands poorly connected between them and on the other will allow the permeability thanks to some punctuality represented by and under and overpasses.

La tangenziale e la ferrovia se da una parte permettono di delineare un confine netto e duro all’area, dall’altra la rendono mera zona di passaggio, un bordo spesso da attraversare per raggiungere il centro città o quella parte di campagna che ancora può definirsi tale. Si tratta di un territorio dinamico tagliato trasversalmente da arterie a scorrimento veloce che da un lato lo dividono in una serie di isole mal collegate tra loro e dall’altro ne permettono la permeabilità in corrispondenza di alcune puntualità rappresentate dai sotto e sovrapassaggi.

The abandoned spaces, however, mark and characterize the landscape of this suburban. The area is in fact characterized by a number of spaces left to themselves, and no one cares. Disposed industrial areas, large expanses of parking underutilized, agricultural lands left uncultivated former, they defined the attitude of indifference that people show towards this territory, a place of passage and rarely a place ok break. The lack of devices that act as a defence in the area means that it is colonized by vagrants, prostititutes, drug dealers, who prefer places rarely visited and away from prying eyes.

Gli spazi abbandonati, invece, scandiscono e connotano il paesaggio di questo periurbano. L’area è infatti caratterizzata da numerosi spazi lasciati a sé stessi, di cui nessuno si prende cura. Aree industriali dismesse, grandi distese di parcheggi sottoutilizzati, terreni ex agricoli lasciati incolti, definiscono l’atteggiamento di non curanza che i cittadini mostrano nei confronti di questo territorio, luogo di passaggio e raramente di sosta. La mancanza di dispositivi che fungono da presidio sul territorio fa sì che l’area sia colonizzata da vagabondi, prostititute, spacciatori, che prediligono luoghi poco frequentati e lontano dagli sguardi indiscreti.

Based on this analysis we intend to propose a project that had as its objectives the development of the area, the theme for the care and protection of agricultural lands and the creation of a new public space for the suburban, through the monitoring and management of the landscape.

Basandosi su queste analisi si è voluto proporre un progetto che avesse come obiettivi la valorizzazione del territorio, il tema della cura e della salvaguardia degli spazi agricoli e la creazione di un nuovo spazio pubblico per il periurbano, attraverso il presidio e la gestione del paesaggio.
